Is it really a sport?

Insomnia. Its a curse. You lay on your bed tossing and turning and you just can't sleep. It frustrates the fractured mind and tortures the weakened body. All I wanted to do was get a good nights sleep. You'd do anything just to get some shut eye.

So I turned to my trusted companion, the one that never fails to entertain me, my television. Aah TV, you are always there for me in my hour of need. But this time, for some cruel twist of fate, there really was nothing on to watch. As I surfed through the endless stream of channels, nothing was remotely passable to watch that would numb my mind and put me to sleep.

But the Winter Olympics was on. Surely this would provide me with some form of entertainment of human determination and grit that would someday inspire me to greatness. It would showcase man's sporting achievements in a thrilling competitive environment.

What would it be? Skiing? Ice hockey perhaps? No. What I got was Curling. Curling? What on earth was this? It was a guy sliding on ice holding onto a big shiny rock and letting it go towards a giant target at the end if the ring. All the while 2 other guys holding brooms clean the surface of the ice in front of said rock in the hopes of guiding it to the centre of the target. That was it. The whole thing was just that. Slide , release rock , brush ice and pray it stops in the center of the target. And you get an Olympic gold medal for that.

I'm wasn't drunk or hallucinating from the lack of sleep. This was really it. A quick check in Wikipedia confirms it. Here's the official explanation of this "sport"

"Two teams of four players take turns sliding heavy, polished granite down the ice towards the house (a circular target marked on the ice). The purpose is to complete each end (delivery of 16 stones) with the teams stones closer to the centre of the house than the other teams'. Two sweepers with brooms or brushes accompany each stone and use stopwatches and their best judgement, along with directions from their teammates, to help direct the stones to their resting place"

Wow! Sounds exciting! 10 minutes of that gut wrenching sport and I was asleep like a baby. i may not have found a new appreciation for this sport, but at least I found the cure for my insomnia and will rest easy knowing that watching this would knock me out cold.

Cheers
